Abstract

This paper investigated the strengthening effectiveness of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) on the axially-loaded circular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) stub columns with spherical-cap gaps. A finite element model was established and validated. The effects of various parameters on the mechanical behavior of the columns were analyzed. Further explorations on the failure mode, stress distribution and contact stress etc. were also discussed. Design equations for predicting their axial compressive strengths were presented. Results declared that the spherical-cap gap weakened the mechanical behavior of the axially-loaded circular CFST stub column, but wrapping CFRP strips could repair or eliminate the adverse effects.
