Abstract

Several attempts were made to observe the vertical vorticity in the sea with a neutral buoyant float fitted with either vertical vanes or radial rods. Measurements over periods of several days were made in deep water off the New England coast, in the Gulf Stream, and southwest of Bermuda. The apparent vorticity at all locations from the float rotation, appears to fluctuate with a magnitude of several revolutions per hour in both a cyclonic and anticyclonic sense.
