Abstract

A review is made of accurate measurements of surface magnetic field intensities of binary X-ray pulsars, using cyclotron resonance features in their X-ray spectra. The field strengths so far measured from about 15 objectsare clustered in a range of (1-4) x 10 8 T. Implications of these results are discussed, leading to an inference that the strong magnetic field of neutron stars might result from alignment of the neutron star magnetic moments.
