Abstract

This paper focuses on the question: Should leisure be measured as a categorical phenomenon which is either present or absent, or is it better measured as a phenomenon which might be present in incremental degrees? This study explores that question using data from an experience sampling study in which participants evaluated situations drawn from their daily lives (“I would call this leisure”), using a 7-point Likert response scale. A persistent bimodal response pattern suggests that a leisure/not leisure distinction was easily made, but responses along the entire 7-point scale imply that incremental judgments of leisure were also being used. This analysis supports the use of a 3-to-5 point incremental scale for the direct measurement of leisure. Limitations of the study are discussed.
