Abstract

A scale for measuring commitment to environmental issues was developed to test the effectiveness of an environmental earth-science course in bringing about an increase in commitment. The elements of the sequential commitment scale are: awareness of, concern for, establishing a position on, and taking action on environmental issues. Using correlated (pre-course and post-course) t-test analyses, one can determine if significant changes took place over the period of time of the course in question. In my course, there was an apparent significant increase in the commitment level when the whole suite of issues was analyzed, and there was a significant increase in the commitment level on ten of fourteen individual issues.
