Abstract

Abstract A concordance (discordance) measure characterizes a particular facet of the agreement (disagreement) between two binary random variables. Association measures such as the odds ratio focus on the dependence between the two variables. Agreement and dependence are different characteristics, and depending on the research question and data at hand, a particular characteristic may be more appropriate, and seldom the question can be approached satisfactorily with the use of both. In this article, we introduce and discuss measures of positive and negative concordance and discordance and relate them to the odds ratio.
