Abstract

It is the purpose of this paper to describe preliminary measurements of ultra‐violet solar radiation made at the School of Tropical Medicine of the University of Puerto Rico under the auspices of Columbia University. This work was initiated by Dr. W. W. Coblentz of the National Bureau of Standards during a visit to Puerto Rico in 1935 (using measuring equipment developed by him at the Bureau of Standards). Subsequently, a Westinghouse ultra‐violet recorder was calibrated, and after several delays it was placed in regular operation on October 28, 1937. The United States Weather Bureau has collaborated by initiating a series of measurements of total solar radiation at San Juan weather Bureau which is located only a few hundred yards from the School of Tropical Medicine. Records of total and ultra‐violet radiation taken at substantially the same point are thus available for comparison.
