Abstract

In this paper, measurements of train vibration impacts on vibration sensitive facilities are presented. Some of these measurements were carried out in the planning phases to evaluate the suitability of potential sites. In some cases, measurements were carried out post-construction to verify the effectiveness of mitigation measures. Data will be presented showing typical setback distances required to meet the most stringent vibration design criteria for sensitive facilities. For cases where specific setback distances might not be achievable, mitigation measures are introduced with supporting data of the effectiveness of those measures (where available). The collection of data presented shows that the most sensitive vibration criteria often require very large setback distances (> 1000ft). However, utilizing careful building design and placement of sensitive instruments below grade can allow achieving those criteria at much closer distances within those setback zones.
