Abstract

The SO-2M neutron breeder reactor is a subcritical nuclear assembly in which fission reactions of uranium nuclei are supported bv the introduction of an external neutron source into the core (Fig. i). The main part of the assembly is a homogeneous core which is built from cylindrical fuel elements. UO2 with 36% 235U enrichment, dispersed in polyethylene, is used as the material undergoing fission. The core with a graphite reflector is surrounded by a heavy-concrete radiation shield with a specific weight of 4.4-104 N/m 3 . The maximum thermal power is i0 W and the total neutron flux of the source is 5"109 sec -I.
