Abstract
A stationary method was developed to determine the diffusion length of thermal neutrons in moderators containing hydrogen using only a small amount of material. The diffusion length of thermal neutrons was determined in water at temperatures 16·1, 47·8, 69·5 and 88·7°C; the resulting values were: 2·640 ± 0·028, 2·858 ± 0·024, 2·974 ± 0·064 and 3·092 ± 0·062 cm. In linear approximation, for the temperature coefficient of the diffusion length, in the 16−89°C temperature interval, a value of +0·00617 ± 0·00086 cm°C was obtained. In diphyl (Dowtherm A), the diffusion length of thermal neutrons at 184·4°C was 5·968 ± 0·266 cm.
