Abstract

A beam of 7 to 40 kev variable energy protons was used for the production of atoms in the metastable 2S-state by a charge exchange mechanism in helium and hydrogen gases. The production and total cross sections were measured and compared to theoretical values. There is good agreement between the experimental and theoretical values of the production cross sections above 23 kev. (H.D.R.)
