Abstract

Measurements of the total and filament a.c. losses in Bi2223/Ag tapes with 75 twisted filaments were made in applied a.c. magnetic fields parallel to the face of the tape. The measurements were undertaken using suitable pickup loops and a lock-in amplifier. The total losses were obtained from the in-phase component of fundamental harmonic of the pickup voltage whilst the filament losses were obtained from the third harmonic. The filaments acted as if they were partially uncoupled for all measured fields (<45mT), and all frequencies (<200Hz). The filament losses were hysteretic in nature and suitably described using Beans 1D formulation for 75 individual filaments. The total losses were the product of these filament losses plus the coupling current losses calculated for a rectangular geometry.
