Abstract

Recently quite a few experiments were performed in order to measure the ls Lamb shift in hydrogen-like heavy ions (16 ⩽ Z ⩽ 36). In this paper the general problems encountered in such experiments are discussed and some typical experiments and their limitations are described. At the end we propose an experiment to measure the ls Lamb shift in hydrogen-like chlorine with a precision of better than 0.5%, competitive with the 1s Lamb shift measurement in hydrogen and with the 2s Lamb shift measurements in hydrogen-like heavy ions. Later this accuracy can be significantly improved with bare heavy ions produced in novel ion sources presently under development.
