Abstract

A model pile has been instrumented with horizontal contact stress sensors for use in a geotechnical centrifuge. Due to the harsh testing environment and measurement difficulties at the soil-structure interface a novel design has been developed. Design, instrumentation and calibration of the horizontal contact stress sensors, installed on thin metal membranes in the pile body, are described. A numerical model is employed to analyze the influence of the membrane geometry compared to an analytical solution. A sensitivity analysis is performed to assess the influence of manufacturing irregularities on the strain gauge output signal.
