Abstract

A hot-film probe has been used to measure slip of high-density polyethylene flowing through a conduit with a rectangular cross section. A transition from no slip to a stick-slip condition has been observed and associated with irregular extrudate shape. Appreciable extrudate roughness was initiated at the same flow rate as that at which the relationship between Nusselt number and Peclet number for heat transfer from the probe departed from the behavior expected for a no-slip condition at the conduit wall.
