Abstract

A method for measuring directly phase distribution of electron bunch in linacs with a high phase resolution is presented. A bunched beam is introduced into an RF deflector of travelling wave type, which is synchronously excited with the same frequency as that of the linac. Deflection of electrons corresponds to their phase in the deflecting field. Electrons of near zero phase pass through the narrow slit placed on a line of the deflector. By means of a phase shifter, which controls input RF phase, the phase of the bunch as to the deflecting field is shifted and phase spread of the bunch can be measured. Principle of the RF deflector used in this measurement is described fully. Phase resolution is discussed in detail and it is shown that the phase resolution of a few degrees is obtainable. Results of measurements are also reported.
