Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses measurements of noise in camera tubes. The characterization of the noise in camera tubes has traditionally been limited to the measurement of its RMS value. A number of techniques for performing this measurement exist, but all suffer from one or more of the following problems: (i) the noise is not well characterized in as much as only the RMS value is measured; (ii) the accuracy of an experimental measurement is variable or difficult to assess; (iii) the technique is limited in application. This chapter describes some computer-aided techniques for measuring the power density spectra and amplitude density functions of noise in the camera tubes in addition to their RMS value. The principle advantages of these methods are that the noise parameters can be measured with high and predictable accuracy, short experiment times are required, and measurements can be made in the presence of signals. Techniques are discussed for measuring power density spectra and amplitude distribution functions of noise in the television camera tubes.
