Abstract

Experimental results of magnetic susceptibility K⊥ and the anisotropy ΔK=K∥−K⊥ of single crystal of Europium Vanadate (EuVO4) between 300 K and 70 K are reported here for the first time. Both ΔK and K⊥ increased on cooling but each attained a constant value at 71 K and 95 K, respectively. The polarised absorption and Zeeman spectra of the 7F0→5D1 transition at 80 K and 10 K and the magnetic results were analysed using intermediately coupled states considering J-mixing due to Crystal Field (CF) interaction, having D2d site symmetry. The best fitted CF parameters are B20=15, B40=550, B60=1700, B44=−1050 and B64=−1900 (all in cm−1). The quadrupole parameters Platt and P24f for 7F0 and 5D0 terms and the expected Mössbauer transitions of 151Eu3+ and 153Eu3+ isomers at D2d sites in EuVO4 were calculated for the first time.
