Abstract

The “wave” experiment on-board GEOS-1 was a cooperative enterprise involving six different European Institutes. We describe here the principle of this complex experiment which measures the cold plasma parameters (density and temperature) via active sounding, the d.c. electric field, and the electromagnetic and electrostatic waves in the frequency range ∼1 × 10 −2 −8 sx 10 4Hz. Preliminary results concerning all these quantities are presented, as well as the general relationships existing between themselves, or between them and similar quantities detected on the ground.
