Abstract

Measurements of compressional wave and shear wave speeds and attenuation are performed in sandy marine sediments. Simple relations are derived to estimate porosity and permeability of marine sediments from the measured compressional and shear wave speeds and attenuation. The estimated porosity and permeability values are compared with direct core measurements. Agreement between estimated and directly measured values indicates that acoustic measurement of porosity and permeability is feasible.
