Abstract
Measurements have been made which extend angular distribution information to E p = 1700 keV in the Li 7(p, γ)Be 8 reaction. An excitation curve at 0 0 does not confirm the presence of new resonances recently proposed at E p = 720 keV and 870 keV. Yield curves for the γ rays corresponding to transitions to the ground state and first-excited state are resonant at both the 441 and 1030 keV resonances. The analysis of the angular distributions show that a satisfactory fit can be made for the a 1( E) coefficient in the expression W( θ, E) = 1+ a 1( E) P 1+… by assuming that the interference results from overlapping compound states of opposite parity. The best fits are obtained for four cases for which the spins and parities of the 441, 1030, 2100 and 5800 keV resonances are given respectively by the values (1 +, 1 +, 1 −, 1 −), (1 +, 1 +, 1 −, 2 −), (1 +, 1 +, 2 −, 1 −) and (1 +, 1 +, 2 −, 2 −).
