Abstract

We have designed and developed a new acoustic system for monitoring rip currents. The system consists of one dual-frequency acoustic fishfinder, two broad-band acoustic transducers, a set of sound reflectors and a data acquisition network. The evaluation test for this system was carried out at Uradome Beach. The result demonstrated the expected performance. During the evaluation test, the system identified a weak offshore current. As a result, it was proven that the developed measurement system has the potential ability to monitor rip currents.
