Abstract

In wire electrical discharge machining (EDM), increase of the wire temperature influences the wire breakage during machining because the increase of the temperature leads to the decrease in mechanical strength of the wire electrode. In this study, in order to measure the wire temperature during wire EDM, a two-color pyrometer with an optical fiber was used. Experimental results showed that the infrared light radiated from the wire electrode during machining could be detected by the two-color pyrometer, and the temperature of wire electrode could be measured. The output ratio increased with the increase of discharge frequency, which means that the temperature of the wire electrode increased with increasing the discharge frequency.
