Abstract

A novel array was designed and tested in the eastern Pacific Ocean for the measurement of the vertical directionality of ambient noise. The results of the test, conducted in 1983, illustrate the existence of a 5-dB "noise notch" for arrival angles associated only with submerged acoustic sources. A measurement system based on improvements to the design and processing is described.
