Abstract

The inclusive and semi-inclusive double spin asymmetries for positively and negatively charged hadrons were measured by HERMES using a polarized positron beam and polarized 3He (1995), 1H (1996/97) and 2D (1998–2000) targets. Preliminary results in the kinematical range 0.023<x<0.6 and 1 GeV2<Q2<10 GeV2 for the asymmetries taken with the polarized deuterium target in the spring of 1999 are presented. Using the whole set of data from 1995 to spring 1999, the polarized quark distributions were extracted as a function of x for up (u+ū) and down (d+d̄) flavors, and for valence and sea quarks. The up quark polarization is positive and the down quark polarization is negative in the measured range. The polarization of the sea is compatible with zero.
