Abstract

This Ph. D. dissertation discusses the measurement of the macroeconomic impacts of tourism. Chapter 1 establishes the conceptual framework for measuring the macroeconomic impacts of tourism. Chapter 2 critically evaluates the methods currently used to measure the macroeconomic impacts of tourism. Chapter 3 develops specific methodologies to measure the economic benefits of tourism (positive balance of payments, generation of jobs and incomes, revenues in central and municipal budgets, diversification of national and local economy, and the impact of tourism on economic growth), while Chapter 4 is dedicated to the methodologies to measure the economic costs of tourism (leakage of national income, price level, non-observed economic activities in tourism, seasonality in employment and incomes, and secondary costs and missed benefits). The methodologies developed in Chapters 3 and 4 are applied in Chapter 5 for the case of Bulgaria.
