Abstract

Commercial manganin stress gauges were used in planar impact experiments to determine the shock Hugoniot of PZT 54/46 in the 20-80 kbar stress range. The wave profiles obtained show a double wave structure in which the leading wave has an amplitude of about 30 kbar. This wave is attributed to the Hugoniot elastic limit as was done previously for PZT 65/35 and 52/48. The general shape of the pressure-time profiles indicate that the Hugoniot elastic limit does not appear as a well defined cusp but rather as a change of curvature in the Hugoniot curve. No indication of a first-order phase transition was found in the pressure range investigated. One current measurement was made for a poled specimen shocked in the normal-mode configuration. The current output in this experiment was 69% of that predicted by theory.
