Abstract

The availability of a launch vehicle with the capability of carrying a heavy payload, would make possible several definitive experiments including: 1) the determination of the composition and energy spectrum of cosmic rays up to 1012 electron volts (eV) 2) the observation of gamma rays from compact sources, up to energies of 1012 eV. The instrument proposed, weighing about 30 tons, is designed to address these fundamental questions.
