Abstract

High-quality H I absorption spectra toward 3C 123 and 3C 147 are presented. For the normal-velocity H I two upper limits to magnetic field strengths and an upper limit to the spin temperature of the intercloud medium are reported. Anomalous-velocity H I is present along both lines of sight. It is found that this H I arises in a rapidly moving large-angular-diameter H I structure. Emission and absorption properties of this H I are also anomalous. Evidence suggesting that the H I structure is the result of collision of high-velocity clouds with the H I disk is presented, suggesting that the H I structure is postshock gas that is cooling down.
