Abstract

In this paper, a simple balloon-shaped fiber interferometer is proposed and demonstrated for measurement of refractive index and temperature. The interferometer has a very simple structure including a standard SMF with a bare fiber bent into balloon shape with two ends of the fiber passed through one silica capillary adhered side by side. The wavelengths of two dips are both sensitive to the external refractive index and temperature. The dips exhibit obvious nonlinear response with the increase of the environment RI. The sensitivities have been retrieved experimentally by fitting the experimental data. The proposed device has the advantages of easy fabrication, robust structure, and low cost.
