Abstract

We have used the bicinchoninic acid reagent developed by Pierce Chemical Co. to measure proteins in a simple flow injection analyzer. The sensitivity is comparable to that of the Lowry method and no pipetting of reagents is needed. Results are obtained in less than 1 min and samples may be run at a rate of 60/h. The response is linear over a range of protein concentration (0–10 μg) and sample size (5–20 μl) convenient for most analytical requirements. A peristaltic pump, a controlled-temperature water bath, and a spectrophotometer with flow cuvette are the only special apparatus required.
