Abstract

A new nondestructive method of measuring polarisation beat lengths in single-mode optical fibres is presented. It is based on modulation of the fibre birefringence with a modulator to be moved along the fibre. The method enables the measurement of the birefringence value for a given fibre section as well as recording birefringence fluctuations across the fibre.
