Abstract

Isothermal sections of Ti-Co-Ge ternary system at 973, 1173 and 1273 K were measured through a technique of alloy sampling, combined with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The existence of several ternary compounds have been confirmed. The current study found interesting results that the Heusler phase τ1 (TiCo2Ge) showed a remarkable composition range with Ti content changing from 10.2 to 27.4 at.% Ti at 973 K to 5.1–21.6 at.% Ti at 1173 K and to 7.8–24.5 at.% Ti at 1273 K. The phase relations in the Ti-Co-Ge system at 973 K, 1173 K and 1273 K were constructed, including 32, 31 and 25 three-phase regions, respectively. It is worth noting that the third element, e.g. Co in Ti5Ge3, has limited solubility in majority binary compounds.
