Abstract

The positive and negative nonlinear refractive index coefficients of NH3 gas are determined for the nine transversely excited atmospheric CO2 laser lines by observing the far-field spatial distortions of the output Gaussian beam passed through the nonlinear cell. The expression of the distorted field, which is a series expansion of Gaussian beams and derived by D. Weaire et al. [Opt. Lett. 4, 331 (1979)], is used. By taking the first two terms of the series, the experimental results are computer analyzed to obtain the nonlinear refractive index coefficient. Among the nine lines observed, one line 9R(16) has shown self-defocusing and eight lines the self-focusing effect.
