Abstract

This review is aimed to elucidate some basic principles of second and third harmonic generation and degenerate four wave mixing. It is written to provide the beginner with references and a guideline for further reading. Experimental and evaluation techniques are described which are frequently used to characterize second and third order nonlinear optical susceptibilities. Special emphasis is given to thin films of organic materials.
