Abstract

A measurement of magnetic field vector by the magneto-birefringence effect of a magnetic fluid and the characteristics of the system are discussed. The system applies a laser diode and a thin film of magnetic fluid as a refracting element by the magneto-birefringence effect. The magnetic fluid has both the large anomalous magneto-birefringence effect and the Faraday effect. These effects cause a change in intensity and the phase shift of the refracted laser beam. In the experimental system, the method for detecting these effects was proposed. Based on the results, it was clarified that the direction of the 2-dimensional magnetic field vector can be measured for both direct and alternating magnetic field. >
