Abstract

Abstract In order to eliminate self-absorption in solid and liquid sources in the study of low-energy beta-particle emitters radioactive gas is introduced in a proportional counter. The low-energy spectrum of 14C is measured and the experimental data agree with the theoretical plot from 0·5 kev upward to 7 kev within statistical limits. The cathode of the counter is made of wires and is surrounded by a ring of nine anti-coincidence guard counters. The main-counter anode is unequally divided to minimize end effects.
