Abstract

The problems of fatigue and malfunction due to high intensity noise have become increasingly important in recent years. Accurate and meaningful measurements of the high intensity noise fields present at aircraft and missile structures and electronic components are necessary to understand these problems. This paper discusses characteristics of available microphones for the measurement of high intensity noise. It points out the difficulties frequently encountered with acoustical measuring systems in the presence of intense noise fields. Techniques for calibrating acoustical measuring systems are also described.
