Abstract

The friction factors for the flow of gases in the fine channels used for microminiature Joule-Thomson refrigerators have been measured. The test channels were fabricated using a photolithographic technique. The width of the channels were 130 to 200 microns and the depth 30 to 60 microns. The tests involved both laminar and turbulent flow regimes. The results we have obtained show some interesting characteristics of flow resistance for very fine channels. These differ from ones for common pipes because of the large relative roughness and asymmetric roughness.
