Abstract

The electric dipole intercombination decay of the 2s2p 3P o 1 level in the Be-like ions N 3+ and O 4+ has been observed with ions circulating in a heavy-ion storage ring. The measurement exploited the sensitivity to extreme-ultraviolet light of a storage ring internal device (MCP) that is normally used only for particle detection. The measured transition probabilities of 500 −65 +90 s −1 for N 3+, and of 2180±70 s −1 for O 4+, corroborate the results of recent calculations and improve the precision with which the isoelectronic trend can be established experimentally.
