Abstract

Cinnamomum osmophloeum Kanehira is commonly used in cooking and folk therapy. The measurement of its bioactive compounds and anti-chronic disease effects contributes to its applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries. As such, this study aims to investigate the effect of bioactive substances, antioxidants and the anti-diabetic activity of extract from the leaves. The concentration of phenol and flavonoid of crude ethanol extracts were 62.1±0.40 and 36.51±0.59 mg/g, respectively. We further separated extract from C. osmophloeum leaves with the solvents n-hexane, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water. The water fraction exhibited the strongest antioxidant capacity, the highest total phenolic content, and the strongest inhibition of DPPH and ferrous ion chelation. The ethyl acetate fraction also exhibited higher DPPH inhibition and ferrous ion chelation. The results also showed that the ethyl acetate fraction had different antioxidant effects when the compounds were further separated by polarity. In conclusion, the compounds isolated from C. osmophloeum leaves show strong antioxidant activity and have the potential to be developed as new drugs for the prevention of chronic diseases.
