Abstract
In common with all migratory salmonids, the adult Atlantic salmon always returns to the place where it was born (the ‘homing’ phenomenon). This characteristic makes it possible to establish, for any given river, a relationship between spawning stock size and the progeny (recruits) produced. This link which is generally described as the ‘stock recruitment relationship’, is peculiar to each stock and depends amongst other things on the characteristic dynamics of the population and territorial productivity of the environment (particularly in freshwater).
