Abstract

An upper limit of 23.8 MeV/c 2 at 95% CL on the τ neutrino mass has been measured with the ALEPH detector. The limit is obtained from a sample of 23 (2) τ ± → 5π ± (π o ) ν τ events by a maximum likelihood fit in the plane hadronic invariant mass, hadronic energy. The events are selected from 65 pb −1 of data collected during the 1991, 1992 and 1993 LEP runs, corresponding to about 76 thousand produced Z 0 → τ + τ − .
