Abstract
This paper describes a measurement system for measuring a large impulse torque generated by a high capacity impact wrench. The mechanical system and electronics were found to be durable, repetitive and accurate. Unfortunately, the impulse nature of the torque excites the dynamics of the measurement system. Typically, this problem can be addressed through measurand reconstruction. However, in this case, it is impossible to generate the known input required to tune the measurand reconstruction. The free vibration characteristics of the dynamometer are used as an approximation to the forward model and a reconstruction algorithm is proposed and implemented. Experimental results are also included for two types of impact wrenches.
