Abstract
It is shown how macroscopic measurement,'' that is, measurement that does not affect the states of a macrosystem in the classical sense, changes a pure state into some kind of mixed state in quantum mechanics. The theory is grounded on the theory of measurement, but its main part is an improved version of the von Neumann theory of measurement. The introduction of the notion of a statistical ensemble'' is necessitated in the theory, and this notion has an intimate connection with that in quantum statistics. (auth)
