Abstract

AbstractIn the second generation of EN 1993‐1‐1, the variation in geometric and mechanical properties of European steel products are now statistically described in a dedicated “Annex E”. The partial safety factors γM for the resistance functions (design equations for strength) were calibrated based on these assumptions. However, while most past research has focused strongly on the mechanical properties and thus the corresponding scatter quantities are well known, there are still a few open aspects regarding the cross‐sectional dimensions. Due to this background and as an independent confirmation of the EN‐values with most recent data, in the present study a detailed measurement campaign on hot‐rolled I‐sections was carried out directly at depots of steel merchants in Switzerland. A total of 561 cross‐sections were measured and analysed. The results helped corroborate the characterisation in Annex E.
