Highlights

  • Coalbed methane is a source of clean energy, and its calorific capacity per cubic meter can reach 33.5–36.8 MJ, which is equivalent to that of 1.22 kg of standard coal or 1.13 L of standard oil (Jackson and Kershaw, 1996; Qian, 2016)

  • A measurement study was conducted for the effective drainage radius of the borehole along coal seam #9 of the Kaiyuan Coal Mine using the gas pressure method

  • The measurement results obtained using the gas pressure method show that the effective drainage radius of the borehole along coal seam #9 is 0.75 m, 27 days after drainage, and 1.5 m, 92 days after drainage

Introduction

Coalbed methane is a source of clean energy, and its calorific capacity per cubic meter can reach 33.5–36.8 MJ, which is equivalent to that of 1.22 kg of standard coal or 1.13 L of standard oil (Jackson and Kershaw, 1996; Qian, 2016). The effective drainage radius of the borehole along coal seam #9 of the Kaiyuan Coal Mine was measured on the site by combining the gas pressure method and the gas flow method.
