Abstract

The virtual cathode oscillators(vircators) are the high power microwave oscillator devices that used space charge limited effect by the high current electron beam. Simplicity and high-power capability are advantages. However, the low efficiency and frequency stability are serious problems. Also, the process of oscillation in the vircators has not to be uncovered clearly. In the vircators, it is well known the beam current modulation is an important role for oscillating microwaves. In this research, to quantitatively clarify the oscillation mechanism of the vircators, we constructed measuring instruments that have high responsiveness in a high-frequency range and measured modulated electron beam. The results suggested that the measurement modulated beam has the characterization in a virtual cathode.
