Abstract

Jo Keal and Gail Beckett discuss measles in light of the recent rise in the number of cases in the UK and Europe, leading to outbreaks in vulnerable populations, and explore how practice nurses are in a unique position to influence the health of the wider population Measles is a highly infectious viral disease that is preventable through effective immunisation. Recent outbreaks in Europe have led to an increase in imported cases to England and Wales, leading in turn to outbreaks in some vulnerable populations. Practice nurses are in a unique position to influence the health of their population. Providing information about measles infection; the increase in UK cases; and offering opportunity for vaccination will enable patients to make an informed choice to support not only protection of their own health, but also contribute to the wider public's health protection.
