Abstract

The article discusses the concept of masculinity in the work of Italian humanist, historian, and physician Paolo Giovio, focusing on dialogues written by Giovio during his stay in the castle of Ischia, Italy in 1527. Topics discussed include previous published and extant editions of the work, the concept of masculinity held by inhabitants of Rome, Italy during the Renaissance, and the role of Italian men as military leaders.
